You've heard of The Big Apple, but did you know that our own Chicago is called The Big Onion? This name is a homage to the Native American word shikaakwa, translated by some sources as "wild garllic" or "wild onion", from the Miami-Illinois language. Later translated to "Chicagou" by the French and used as the name of the Chicago River mouth and Fort Dearborn area.
